#FootballTrans: promoting the visibility of trans people through soccer during the #FootballPeople weeks

During the period from October 8 to 22, 2020, more than 150,000 people in 60 countries mobilized to organize and participate in events and activities that seek to generate positive social change through football. The activities carried out during the so-called #FootballPeople weeks (organized by Fare Network) have made this initiative the largest campaign in Europe for social change and diversity in football and more and more countries outside of Europe are joining the campaign.

On October 18, Mexico participated in the #FootballPeople weeks with the #FootballTrans activity, a soccer-tennis tournament aimed at confronting transphobia and promoting the visibility of trans people through soccer.

In the soccer tennis tournament, 6 teams of 5 people each participated, which allowed respecting the healthy distance restrictions due to the pandemic. Masks with motifs in the colors of the trans flag were distributed to all attendees and each participant was disinfected before entering the field.

The tournament consisted of a competition where the athletes demonstrated their skills for mastery and control of the ball. The objective of the game was to throw a ball hitting it with the foot, knee or head so that it reached the rival side passing over the net and looking for the opposing team to not be able to return the ball and thus gain a point. After a direct elimination competition the winning team was Chicas Trans Azkatl who prevailed in the final against the team Zorros LGBT.

FootbalTrans was an open call for anyone to participate, the only requirement was that at least one member of the Trans community participate in each team.

The activity placed Mexico, for the second consecutive year, as one of the Latin American countries that were part of the events of the international #FootballPeople campaign and was listed on the activity map on the official Fare Network page www.farenet.org.
